The Japanese government is aiming to improve the food self-sufficiency rate, so farmland is an important resource for it. The white paper also touches on trends in farmland.
According to it, it is expected to reach 4.397 million hectares in 2019 and 4.14 million hectares in 2030.

Looking at long-term farmland trends,

It has been declining consistently since the 1970s, but it is believed that in the 1970s, agricultural land was converted to industrial land due to economic growth.
On the other hand, economic growth has stopped since the 1990s, so this time there are less farmers and farmland is decreasing. Is it possible to keep farmland with declining the number of farmers?
Next time, I will introduce the Japanese government’s efforts to respond to the declining farmers.
