Rice is one of the most special crop for Japan people.
Japan Grain Inspection Association has tested rice quality in harvested season since 1971.
The test is conducted by a relative method in which the sample (each variety and producing area) and the standard rice set by the association are compared and evaluated for the following 6 items by a panel of 20 people.

- Appearance
- Fragrance
- Taste
- Stickiness
- Hardness
- Comprehensive evaluation
The result of the test is shown by the five ranks which are Super A, A, A’, B and B’. Super A is good evaluation, and A’ is the same evaluation of the standard rice. If the sample is ranked Super A, that rice has competitive in market.
In 2019, 54 in 139 samples is ranked as Super A.
